Gothi and Alani in South-Eastern Europe. On the Problem of Mutual Influence in the Late Roman Age
Archaeological determination of Alanic antiquities in South-Eastern Europe of the “pre-Gothi” period is very problematic. According to the reports of antique authors the Alanic appearance at lower Danube can be connected with separate military operations, but not with the general settlement.
Archaeological material at our disposal allows us to separate the Alanic features in the Cherniahov culture from other ones (Hunnic and general Sarmatian ones). Alanic elements in the Cherniahov culture are spread irregularly and, taking into consideration Iordanes' silence on the description of Alans in Hermanarich's military actions in Meothis, we assume that the possible campaign against Tanaite Alans through the Herulian lands finished with a failure.
Finds of the Cherniahov culture at Alan sites allows us to reconstruct
the way of Alani to the Lower Danube through the Crimea and the Visigothic
lands, omitting Ostrogothic territories.
