Enamel fibula workshop in North East Slovakia

Hrabušce (Spišská Nová Ves region) has been a well known archaeological site for long years. Excavations concentrated on Medieval features, but there was evidence found also for local iron producing in the Early Iron Age and during the period of the Púchov Culture.

Recently, the employees of the museum of Eperjes/Prešov were informed about several bronze and iron objects found by a metal detector. There were three fibulas with enamel decoration. These are arched fibulas consisting of triangular parts, frequently met in the second half of the 2nd - beginning of the 3rd centuries, mainly in the south part of Pannonia, but also in the western provinces.

From the Barbaricum we know only two examples: one from Lithuania and one from the Ukraine. On the basis of the newly found pieces we can suggest the existence of a workshop in Hrabu(ice where such fibulas could be produced. Unfortunately people with the detector demolished the major part of the site, so the chances for the excavation of the workshop are minimal.
