Roman brooches in Slovakia

Brooches belong to more numerous sorts of Roman ware in Slovakia. We find them mostly in cemeteries - settlement finds are rather rare. This is probably caused by the fact that after the breaking of a fibula it could be easyly smelted and re-used for a production of another bronze, rarely iron object. Brooches were imported to the territory of Slovakia mainly in Early Roman Period, but we meet them in less amounts also in the Late Roman times. This statement can be distorted by the fact that in the Late Roman Period graves are poorly furnished. The real number of Roman brooches thus could be higher than we assume from the grave finds. In the first 2(3 decades of the 1st century there is an interesting concentration of imported brooches in northern parts of Slovakia, in the region of Púchov culture (also some rare types, e.g. Langrton-Down). With the establishment of Vannius' kindgom after 25 A.D. in south-western Slovakia the situation is changed and imported brooches are concentrated in this territory. Some of them (A 68) are so numerous that we could may be speak about a possibility of local (Barbarian) production. However, it must be proved by technological observations.
